Description

MULTI-ERROR VARIETY: This 1870 Indian Head Cent combines two distinct error types — Repunched Date and Die Clash — on a single coin, making it a dual-variety issue of particular interest to collectors pursuing combination errors. The repunched date component shows digits 187 punched over original 187 with clear second impressions visible beneath the final date position. The die clash component is equally significant: portions of the reverse design — specifically the C from CENT and part of the wreath — clashed onto the obverse die and appear in front of the Indian's eye, where no design element should exist. Die clashes occur when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring incuse impressions of each die's design onto the opposing die face. The combination of hand-punched date error and die clash on one die makes this a particularly complex variety to study. James Barton Longacre's bronze Indian Head Cent, composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, was in its twelfth year of production by 1870.
