Description
The 1870 (CC) Seated Liberty Dollar represents a Carson City Mint issue from the Seated Liberty Dollars 1840-1873 series. With a mintage of 12,462, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 3% of production. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1870-S is a legendary rarity with approximately nine known examples, possibly struck for the San Francisco Mint cornerstone ceremony. Coined at the Carson City Mint in Nevada, which operated for just 23 years (1870–1893) and produced coins now prized for their scarcity and Western provenance. S. numismatics.
