Description

Cataloged as Judd-782 with Pollock cross-reference 3818, this gilt proof eagle ($10) pattern from 1869 was struck on a base metal planchet and gold-plated to simulate the appearance of a gold coin at a fraction of the material cost. The gilt format was particularly valuable for eagle-denomination patterns because each gold original contained substantial precious metal content, making the production of multiple test pieces in actual gold prohibitively expensive. By striking designs on gilt planchets, the Mint could expand its pattern evaluation program without proportionally increasing its gold expenditure. The obverse features experimental designs exploring post-Civil War coinage concepts, while the reverse displays alternative compositions under consideration during the Reconstruction era, when the nation was simultaneously healing from civil war and debating fundamental questions about the role of silver and gold in the monetary system. Minted during the period when Mint Director James Pollock oversaw an ambitious program of pattern production across virtually every denomination, the 1869 gilt eagle patterns document the government's continued search for improved coinage designs even as the nation grappled with the greenback currency question and the resumption of specie payments. Rated R.8 on the standard rarity scale with fewer than 4 examples estimated to survive, this gilt eagle pattern is among the rarest entries in the Judd catalog of United States pattern coins, placing it at the apex of Reconstruction-era pattern collecting.
