SHD-5c-1869-01 Shattered Die
Error
Description
The only documented shattered die for the 1869 Shield Nickel, the SHD-5c-1869-01 preserves a dramatic end-stage die failure on one of America's early base-metal five-cent coins. A shattered die represents the terminal condition of die deterioration — where multiple interconnected cracks have propagated across the die face until the entire surface resembles a web of fracture lines, producing coins covered in raised irregular lines that cross over design elements without regard for the original engraving. Unlike individual die cracks or cuds, which affect localized areas, a shattered die involves the comprehensive structural failure of the working steel. The Shield Nickel, designed by James B. Longacre and produced from 1866 through 1883, was America's first standardized five-cent coin in copper-nickel composition, and die varieties from the series are considerably scarcer than those from later nickel designs due to both lower survival rates and less systematic documentation of the early production years. Attributed by Cuds on Coins as SHD-5c-1869-01, the 1869 date falls in the "with rays" to "without rays" transition period of the series — the reverse rays were removed after 1867 — making this a without-rays example. Shattered die specimens attract collectors who appreciate the visual drama of catastrophic die failure captured in metal.
