Description
This proof quarter pattern from 1868 features an experimental design for the Seated Liberty twenty-five cent piece. The quarter received only a single pattern variety for the year, contrasting sharply with the ten-variety dime program and suggesting that the Mint was more satisfied with the quarter's existing design. The larger silver planchet of the quarter accommodated the IN GOD WE TRUST motto and other design elements more comfortably than the dime, reducing the need for extensive experimentation. The Seated Liberty quarter would continue in its established form through 1891. Cataloged as PCGS #60868.
