Description
This proof nickel pattern showcases a variant die combination in the 1867 experimental series. The Shield nickel's first full year of production in 1867 revealed practical challenges with the reverse design, where the stars and rays surrounding the numeral 5 caused excessive die breakage during high-speed striking. The Mint was already considering modifications that would eventually lead to the removal of the rays in 1867, and patterns like J-562 may document stages of this design evolution. The obverse shield motif with its bold horizontal and vertical lines had proven a durable design element well suited to the harder nickel alloy. Cataloged as PCGS #60772.
