Description

The third proof cent pattern variety cataloged for 1867, this piece features a distinguishing characteristic in either composition, die state, or design detail that separates it from J-550 and J-551. By 1867, the Mint was well established in its pattern-making protocols, with Superintendent James Pollock overseeing a systematic approach to experimental coinage. These cent patterns were among the less urgent of the Reconstruction-era experiments since the Indian Head cent's compact design presented fewer challenges for motto integration than the larger denominations.
