Description
This brass medal cataloged as JAB-M5 depicts Thomas Jefferson and was produced by John Adams Bolen as part of his M-series mulings. The M designation indicates Bolen paired two dies not originally intended to form a single medal. Jefferson, the third President and author of the Declaration of Independence, was a natural subject for Bolen's presidential portrait series. Mulings were a distinctive feature of Bolen's creative practice, allowing him to multiply unique collectible varieties from his existing die stock while producing interesting and sometimes unexpected pairings. The brass composition contributes to the warm golden appearance many collectors find attractive. The M-series mulings are collected alongside the numbered JAB series and the K-series (Kline continuations) as part of the comprehensive Bolen oeuvre, with each die combination in each metal tracked as a separate variety.
Rarity Notes
J.A. Bolen brass muling depicting Jefferson. M-series mulings produced in very limited quantities, typically under 25 per metal.
