Description
A gilt striking of the J-543 three-dollar pattern, produced by applying a thin gold wash over a base-metal planchet. Gilt patterns allowed the Mint to create coins that visually approximated gold pieces without expending precious metal on experimental strikes. This technique was particularly valuable for gold denomination patterns, where the cost of striking numerous test pieces in actual gold would have been prohibitive. The gilt finish simulates the warm yellow color of the three-dollar gold piece, enabling realistic evaluation of the design's appearance with the new IN GOD WE TRUST motto. Under close examination, the gilt surface reveals the underlying base metal at high points and edges where handling has worn through the thin gold layer, giving these pieces a distinctive two-toned character prized by pattern collectors.
