Description
The third variety in the 1866 half eagle pattern series, this proof striking completes a trio of experimental designs testing IN GOD WE TRUST on the five-dollar gold denomination. The existence of three Judd numbers for this denomination (J-545 through J-547) indicates the Mint gave particular care to the half eagle's motto design, because it was the most commonly encountered gold coin in everyday American commerce. Each variety tests a subtle variation in the interaction between the motto ribbon and the established reverse design. The Coronet Head obverse, unchanged since 1839, provides visual continuity while the reverse undergoes its most significant modification in nearly three decades. These patterns led directly to the WITH MOTTO half eagle that entered production in 1866 and continued through the denomination's final Liberty Head year in 1908.
