Description

The 1866 Liberty Head Eagle - Motto was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Eagle in the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. With a mintage of 3,750, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 16% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" added to the reverse, creating a major type distinction. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding.
