Description
The 1864 Silver Three Cent Piece is a cent from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the Silver Three Cent Pieces 1851-1873 series. With a mintage of 12,000, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 96% of production. The obverse features a six-pointed star enclosing a Union shield and the reverse displays a Roman numeral III (three) within a large letter C. Produced during the Civil War, when coin hoarding caused severe shortages and the Mint experimented with new compositions to keep coins in circulation. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $640 to $1.7K depending on grade and condition.
