Description
Struck during the first year of the bronze Indian Head Cent composition, this 1864 L on Ribbon die clash preserves evidence of direct die-to-die contact on both sides. On the obverse, transferred reverse elements appear as incuse ghost images — the C from CENT and wreath details clashed into the fields around the Indian head. The reverse carries reciprocal clash marks where feather details from the obverse headdress transferred onto the wreath and legend areas. The L on Ribbon subtype refers to designer James Longacre's initial, added to the ribbon trailing from the headdress partway through the 1864 bronze production run, creating two distinct subtypes. Die clashes occur when the press cycles without a planchet between the dies, allowing the hardened steel faces to impress elements of each design into the opposing surface. The bilateral nature of this clash — visible on both obverse and reverse — indicates a forceful contact event that left substantial transferred detail, distinguishing it from lighter clashes that mark only one side. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them.
