The 1862 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle - 2/1 is a Gold Quarter Eagle minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 98,508, this is a less common issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 48% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Wartime production at Philadelphia only; gold coins hoarded as greenbacks circulated at a discount. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding.
