(1861) Silver Medal J-MI-8, William Washington
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The circa 1861 silver military medal cataloged as Julian MI-8 honors Lieutenant Colonel William Washington at the Battle of Cowpens. This silver striking dates from the Civil War era, when the Philadelphia Mint produced silver examples of earlier Revolutionary War medals for collectors and institutions. The silver composition elevates this above the standard bronze duplicates in both material value and collectibility. The obverse features William Washington's military portrait, and the reverse carries the Cowpens commemorative imagery. The 1861 production date places this medal during the early months of the Civil War, when interest in Revolutionary War heroes and their sacrifices resonated particularly strongly with a nation once again facing existential military conflict. Silver strikings of Revolutionary War medals from the mid-nineteenth century are relatively scarce and represent a period when the Mint was actively producing medals in multiple metals to satisfy diverse collector preferences. The William Washington medal in silver provides a premium format for one of the lesser-known but strategically important heroes of the southern campaign.
Rarity Notes
Silver examples from the 1861 production are scarce. Significantly less available than bronze duplicates and restrikes.
