Coin Details
Description
Civil War token cataloged as Fuld 225A/327b, combining obverse die 225 — a design inscribed "THE FEDERAL UNION IT MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED" — with reverse die 327 bearing the inscription "THE FEDERAL UNION IT MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED". Andrew Jackson's famous 1830 anti-nullification toast, revived as a Union rallying cry. "Federal Union" text dies carried Andrew Jackson's defining declaration of federal supremacy, adapted as a rallying cry for a new generation facing the same existential threat to national unity. Struck in brass, a copper-zinc alloy that gave the token a golden appearance while maintaining similar size and weight to copper pieces. This token lacks the merchant identification found on most Civil War store cards. Its placement in the Fuld Location Unknown section reflects the purely patriotic or political nature of its die combination. Bearing the date range 1861-65, covering the years of the wartime coin shortage.
Rarity Notes
Copper strikings are generally the most common metal variant for Civil War store cards, as copper was the standard planchet material mimicking the federal cent. With 1 cataloged varieties, The Federal Union was a limited producer of Civil War tokens.
