Description
This 1860 bronze token, cataloged as DeWitt AL-1860-41, is a pierced variant of the "Rail Splitter of the West" campaign piece for Abraham Lincoln. The piercing indicates this token was worn as a pendant or badge, suspended from a ribbon or chain as a visible declaration of political support. The pierced condition adds historical context, as it demonstrates the token's original function as wearable campaign material rather than a pocket piece. This variety shares the same die combination as PCGS #681783 but is distinguished by the deliberate hole that allowed suspension. Lincoln campaign tokens were produced and distributed in enormous quantities during 1860, as the Republican Party's organizational machinery mobilized thousands of "Wide-Awake" clubs whose members marched in torchlight parades wearing campaign badges and carrying lanterns. The "Rail Splitter" image proved extraordinarily effective as campaign propaganda, reducing the complex political issues of 1860 — slavery expansion, popular sovereignty, states' rights — to a simple narrative of frontier virtue and honest labor that resonated with northern voters.
Rarity Notes
DeWitt AL-1860-41, pierced. The hole indicates original use as a wearable campaign badge. Pierced examples are valued as evidence of contemporary use but may command lower premiums than unpierced specimens.
