Description
The 1859 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle represents a San Francisco Mint issue from the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 15,200, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 16% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Small mintages at Philadelphia and San Francisco; the denomination was declining in commercial importance. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $1.0K to $23K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7790.
