The 1859 Die Trial is a United States coin from the Die Trials, Hub Trials, and Splashers 1792-1982 series — 20th of 39 years in the series. In 1859, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a combined mintage of 12. This represents the highest annual mintage in the entire series, above the series median of 2. The obverse features test impressions from coin dies, ranging from fully detailed to partial impressions and the reverse displays test impressions that may be blank, partial, or paired with unrelated dies (mules). Struck during the California Gold Rush era, when vast quantities of western gold transformed the American economy and led to new denominations.
