Description
Part of the Large Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1856-1889 series, the 1859 (C) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar from the Charlotte Mint. With a mintage of 5,235, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 3% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a larger, more detailed head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. Final year of Dahlonega gold dollar production. The 1859-D is a prized Southern gold rarity. Coined at the Charlotte Mint, a gold-only facility that operated in North Carolina for just 23 years before the Civil War ended its production. Estimated market value ranges from $3.2K to $35K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
