Description
This copper medalet, cataloged as GW-264, features portraits of both George and Martha Washington, produced circa 1858. Medallic tributes depicting George and Martha Washington together are relatively uncommon in the extensive Washington medal series, making this piece distinctive among the hundreds of varieties that focus exclusively on George. Martha Washington served as a steadying presence during the Revolutionary War, visiting the Continental Army camps each winter and providing crucial support to her husband. This medalet acknowledges her partnership in both the military struggle and the subsequent presidency. The copper composition and medalet format (smaller than a full-sized medal) suggest a commercially produced piece intended for the collector market. The circa 1858 date places this piece in the period of maximum antebellum collecting activity, when the numismatic hobby was experiencing rapid growth in America. The GW-264 catalog number identifies this as a recognized variety in the Musante-Baker reference.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. George and Martha Washington paired portrait pieces are less common than single-portrait Washington medals. Copper medalets of this type appear infrequently.
