Description
The 1857 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. The U.S. Mint produced 214,130 examples, making this the highest mintage among 4 variants, accounting for 67% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Only Philadelphia and San Francisco struck quarter eagles as Southern branch mint production wound down. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $2.2K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7782.
