Description
A Gold Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1856 Liberty Gold Dollar - Upright 5 belongs to the Large Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1856-1889 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.8 million examples, making this ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 50% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a larger, more detailed head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. First year of the Type 3 design, struck mid-year. Upright 5 and Slant 5 varieties exist at Philadelphia. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $1.0K depending on grade and condition.
