Description
The 1854 Liberty Gold Dollar - Type 2 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Dollar in the Small Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1854-1856 series. The U.S. Mint produced 783,943 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a smaller head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. First year of the Type 2 design. Striking difficulties were immediately apparent due to the thin planchet and shallow relief. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $550 to $5.7K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7531.
