Description
The 1854 (D) Liberty Gold Dollar, struck at the Dahlonega Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 collection. With a mintage of 2,935, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Last year of the Type 1 design. The Type 2 (Small Indian Princess) replaced it with a larger 15mm diameter to address the tiny coin's impracticality. Dahlonega's Georgia mint operated from 1838 to 1861, processing Appalachian gold into coins — all Dahlonega issues are collectible rarities. Estimated market value ranges from $3.2K to $47K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7526.
