Description
A Gold Quarter Eagle from the Charlotte Mint, the 1854 (C) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle belongs to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 7,295, this is a scarce issue — ranked 3rd of 5 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1854-S with only 246 struck is a legendary rarity — one of the rarest regular-issue U.S. coins. Coined at the Charlotte Mint, a gold-only facility that operated in North Carolina for just 23 years before the Civil War ended its production. Estimated market value ranges from $3.4K to $106K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
