Description
The 1853 Seated Liberty Half Dime - No Arrows is a dime produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Seated Liberty Half Dimes 1837-1873 series. With a mintage of 135,000, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays an agricultural wreath enclosing the denomination. Arrows added at the date to denote the reduced silver weight mandated by the Act of February 21, 1853. High production to replace hoarded older coins. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $32 to $409 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 1.34 grams, 15.9 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4351.
