Description
Produced at the Dahlonega Mint, the 1853 (D) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 3,178, this is an extremely rare issue — the scarcer of two mint variants, with less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. New Orleans struck its final quarter eagles before a hiatus for this denomination at that facility. The Dahlonega Mint in Georgia struck gold coins from 1838 until its closure at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Estimated market value ranges from $3.7K to $67K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7768.
