Description
The 1852 (O) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle represents a New Orleans Mint issue from the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 140,000, this is a less common issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 11% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Continued strong mintages fueled by California gold flooding Eastern mints. New Orleans's branch mint, active from 1838 through 1909, produced coins that carry a distinct historical significance tied to the antebellum and postbellum South.
