Description
The 1851 Liberty Head Double Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Double Eagle in the Liberty Head Double Eagles 1849-1907 series. The U.S. Mint produced 2.1 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 87% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM surrounded by a glory of rays. Strong production from Gold Rush gold. Both Philadelphia and New Orleans struck double eagles. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $5.0K to $33K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8904.
