Description

This bronzed medal Julian MT-2 honors Robert Maskell Patterson (1787-1854), who served as the tenth Director of the United States Mint from 1835 to 1851. Patterson's directorship was one of the most consequential in Mint history, overseeing the introduction of steam-powered coinage in 1836, the expansion of branch mint operations to Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans, and the massive increase in gold coinage following the California Gold Rush of 1849. Under his leadership, the Mint was transformed from a single-facility operation into a national system capable of meeting the monetary demands of a rapidly expanding nation. The obverse features a portrait of Patterson, a distinguished scientist and academic who brought intellectual rigor and administrative competence to the Mint directorship. The son of Robert Patterson Sr., who had also served as Mint Director (1806-1824), the younger Patterson represented a family deeply embedded in the institution's history.
