Description
The 1849 Seated Liberty Half Dime - 1849/6 9 Over Widely Placed 6, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Seated Liberty Half Dimes 1837-1873 collection. With a mintage of 1.3 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 32% of production. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays an agricultural wreath enclosing the denomination. Gold Rush era. Half dimes circulated heavily as small change while gold flooded the economy. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792.
