Description
A Gold Quarter Eagle from the Dahlonega Mint, the 1849 (D) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle belongs to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 10,945, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 25% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. California Gold Rush bullion boosted production. Charlotte and Dahlonega continued modest output. Dahlonega's Georgia mint operated from 1838 to 1861, processing Appalachian gold into coins — all Dahlonega issues are collectible rarities. Estimated market value ranges from $3.4K to $19K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7754.
