Description
The circa 1849 bronzed copper military medal cataloged as Julian MI-27 honors Major General Winfield Scott and represents a variant of the Scott Mexican War medal in the bronzed copper finish. The bronzed treatment provides a darker, more lustrous surface than standard bronze, indicating a carefully finished collector duplicate produced at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features Scott's military portrait with the bronzed finish enhancing the portrait relief. The reverse carries commemorative imagery of Scott's campaign. The MI-27 Julian number designates a specific die variety or format distinct from the MI-26 version. Scott served as the Commanding General of the United States Army from 1841 to 1861, the longest tenure in that position. His "Anaconda Plan" for defeating the Confederacy by naval blockade and control of the Mississippi River was initially ridiculed but ultimately proved to be the strategic framework for Union victory. By the time the Civil War began, Scott was seventy-four years old and too infirm for field command, but his strategic vision guided the early war effort.
Rarity Notes
Bronzed copper finish produced in limited quantities. The MI-27 variant may be scarcer than the standard MI-26 bronze.
