(1848) Token DeWitt ZT 1848-18 Copper Holed Major Genl. Z. Taylor Campaign
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This holed copper campaign token for Major General Zachary Taylor, cataloged as DeWitt ZT 1848-18, represents another variety in the 1848 Taylor campaign series. Each DeWitt number documents a distinct die combination produced by the network of die-sinkers and token manufacturers who supplied the commercial market for political memorabilia. Taylor's candidacy was unusual in that he was genuinely reluctant to enter politics — he repeatedly said he would only serve if called upon by the people, and he refused to campaign actively on his own behalf. This passive approach, while genuine, also served a strategic purpose: by avoiding policy statements, Taylor prevented internal Whig divisions over slavery, tariffs, and internal improvements from fracturing his coalition. The copper composition and holed condition of this token indicate it was produced for wearing during campaign events and rallies. Taylor's supporters organized "Rough and Ready" clubs across the country that distributed campaign material including tokens like this one. The 1848 election was the last in which the Whig Party would win the presidency — the party's inability to resolve the slavery question led to its collapse in the 1850s and replacement by the Republican Party.
