Description

The 1844 Braided Hair Coronet Head Cent is a cent from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the Braided Hair Coronet Head Cents 1839-1857 series. With a mintage of 2.4 million, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left with braided hair swept up and held by a beaded cord, wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. The 1844/81 overdate is one of the most dramatic large cent overdates. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding.
