Description
The 1843 (D) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle - Small D was struck at the Dahlonega Mint as a Gold Quarter Eagle in the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 36,209, this is a scarce issue — ranked 4th of 8 mint variants by mintage, with 6% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Large and small date varieties exist for the Philadelphia issue. Four mints struck quarter eagles this year. Coined at the Dahlonega Mint, a small Georgia facility that produced gold coins from local deposits for just 23 years before the Civil War. Estimated market value ranges from $4.3K to $50K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7730.
