Description
The 1842 Seated Liberty Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Seated Liberty Dollars 1840-1873 collection. With a mintage of 184,618, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Modest production continued at Philadelphia. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $486 to $6.9K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
