Description
Judd-104 Restrike is the restrike version of the 1839 Gobrecht dollar, one of the most recognized and collected pattern coins in American numismatics. The obverse features Christian Gobrecht's celebrated Liberty Seated design with stars added around the border and the designer's name removed from the base of the rock, distinguishing it from the 1836 original where "C. GOBRECHT F." appears on the base. The reverse displays the iconic flying eagle in a plain field without stars, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" around the periphery. Although 300 original 1839 Gobrecht dollars were struck for circulation, the restrike production occurred from approximately 1862 to 1864 to meet collector demand. Restrikes are identifiable by Die Alignment III or IV, strong mirror-like fields, granularity within the eagle's design, and sometimes rusty-looking letters. Approximately 75 to 100 examples are known today, making this the most available Gobrecht dollar restrike. The coins weigh approximately 412.5 grains of.900 fine silver with a reeded edge.
