Description
Judd-79 Original is an 1838 half dollar pattern combining the Liberty Seated obverse with raised letters (Obverse 2) with Gobrecht's flying eagle reverse (Reverse B). The obverse displays Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design with "LIBERTY" in raised letters on the shield, 13 stars flanking the seated figure, and the date 1838 in a gentle curve. The reverse shows Gobrecht's iconic flying eagle in a plain field, mouth open with neck feathers somewhat ruffled, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" above and "HALF DOLLAR" below. This reverse die was also used with J-73 and J-74. The original striking conforms to the weight standard of the Mint Act of January 18, 1837 at 206.25 grains of.900 fine silver. This pattern represents a significant step in the design evolution that led to the adoption of the Liberty Seated motif for regular half dollar coinage beginning in 1839, with modifications to the seated figure.
