Description
The 1836 Classic Head Half Eagle, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Classic Head Half Eagles 1834-1838 collection. Total mintage reached 553,147. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a fillet or headband inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM without the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Philadelphia production continued. The Classic Head half eagle was well-established in commerce. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $1.4K to $14K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.9% gold, 10.1% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 22.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8174.
