Description
A dime from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1836 Capped Bust Dime belongs to the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.2 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Minted during the age of Jacksonian democracy and the rise of the common man, as new branch mints opened in Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $54 to $2.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.67 grams, 18.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4528.
