Description
The 1834 Capped Head to Left Half Eagle - Plain 4 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Half Eagle in the Capped Head to Left Half Eagles 1813-1834 series. The U.S. Mint produced 50,141 examples, making this the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a cap with curls of hair beneath and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Final year of the Capped Head type, replaced mid-year by the Classic Head design after gold weight reduction. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $27K to $175K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 8.75 grams, 23.8 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8160.
