Description
The 1834 Christopher Bechtler One Dollar Gold Piece with 28 grains and high "28.G" inscription is a die variety distinguished by the elevated placement of the weight designation on the reverse. Where the "Centered" variety (PCGS #10058) positions "28.G" in proper alignment, this variety shows the mark noticeably higher in the die field, creating a diagnostic difference that collectors use to distinguish between the two issues. Christopher Bechtler's gold dollars of the 28-grain weight standard were struck using dies he engraved by hand at his workshop in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. The hand-engraving process naturally produced subtle variations between dies, and the positioning of individual elements like weight marks, letters, and decorative devices varied from one die to the next. These variations, rather than being errors, are characteristic features of private mint coinage that make each die pairing a distinct collectible variety. Both the centered and high varieties share the same basic design: "CAROLINA GOLD" with the weight mark on the obverse, and "ONE DOLLAR" with "C. BECHTLER" on the reverse. The 28-grain standard indicates Bechtler was responsive to changes in federal monetary policy, adjusting his coins' gold content to maintain compatibility with the circulating medium.
Rarity Notes
