Description
Part of the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series, the 1833 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent is a cent from the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 2.7 million, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 87% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. Minted during the age of Jacksonian democracy and the rise of the common man, as new branch mints opened in Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $38 to $1.1K depending on grade and condition. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1696.
