Description
This token represents the Catch Club of Philadelphia, a musical and social organization devoted to the singing of catches, glees, and rounds—forms of vocal music popular in English-speaking countries since the seventeenth century. A "catch" is a round or canon for multiple voices where the overlapping entries create humorous or surprising word combinations, while "glees" are part-songs for three or more unaccompanied voices. Such singing clubs were important social institutions in early American cities. The Catch Club of Philadelphia was modeled on similar organizations in England, most notably the Noblemen and Gentlemen's Catch Club of London founded in 1761. American catch clubs served as fraternal gathering places where members combined musical entertainment with dining, drinking, and social networking. Membership typically drew from the professional and mercantile classes—lawyers, physicians, merchants, and clergy who shared an appreciation for vocal harmony. The issuance of a token by a social club rather than a commercial business is unusual among Hard Times tokens, which were predominantly merchant advertising pieces. The Catch Club token served as a membership badge, an admission token for meetings, or simply a commemorative piece celebrating the organization's existence during a period of economic hardship when such social bonds took on added importance.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Unusual social/musical club token among predominantly commercial Hard Times issues.
