Description
The 1828 Capped Bust Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a quarter in the Capped Bust Quarters 1815-1838 series. With a mintage of 102,000, this is a scarce issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck during a period of national unity and westward expansion following the War of 1812, as the U.S. grew in confidence and territory. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $1.9K to $120K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 6.74 grams, 27.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #5342.
