Description
Part of the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series, the 1828 Capped Bust Dime - Large Date is a dime from the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reduced-size type was introduced, with a smaller diameter and reeded edge. Both large and small sizes may have been struck this year. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $159 to $8.6K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.7 grams, 19 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4506.
