Description

The 1822 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 collection. With a mintage of 2.1 million, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. Struck during a period of national unity and westward expansion following the War of 1812, as the U.S. grew in confidence and territory. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $43 to $3.2K depending on grade and condition. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1624.
