Description
The 1821 Capped Bust Dime - Large Date represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.2 million examples, making this the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck during a period of national unity and westward expansion following the War of 1812, as the U.S. grew in confidence and territory. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $108 to $4.7K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.7 grams, 19 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4496.
